Let’s Try This
This section of ” Instructional Podcasts ” experiments with the phrase ” Let’s Try This …” for certain arranging techniques or concepts. This is my favorite podcast to record, because to me, this is the quintessential question that all creative jazz musicians must ask themselves: ” Let’s Try This” such and such chord substitution or chord voicing or chord insertion technique !
Don’t be afraid to try many different techniques. Sometimes a ” Mistake ” becomes a new ” Let’s Try This ” concept. This happened to me while I was teaching a student in California. He played a ” F+7 ” chord using a major 7th. I corrected him but also heard a unique quality to the chord he played. And since then I have sometimes been able to play a major 7th with a raised fifth as a substitution for a dominant V chord. This has now become one of my new “Let’s Try This” golden nuggets.. if you will.
I recommend making a list of concepts called ” Let’s Try This “. In this way you can experiment and get a great final arrangement in a relatively short period of time. Otherwise you may spend hours trying to change a major chord to a dominant when this may not be a possible substitution.
Experimenting is really the best way to get a unique arrangement. So many students ask me what I would do in a particular instance. I can ” lead ” them in the right direction , but the student will best learn by experimenting on their own with ” Let’s Try This ” !
